Creating a DEM (digital terrain model)
A digital terrain model is a digital presentation of geological information. Two types of information encoding can be used for this. Such modeling and research of the resulting models is an integral part of cartography. High-quality creation of DEM (digital terrain model) is the key to long-lasting construction.
Why are digital terrain models needed?
Today, digital terrain models in 3D format are used for:
- determination of all possible features of the area;
- construction of profiles, horizons and relief sections;
- forecasting the safety of any construction;
- forecasts of changes in terrain and vegetation;
- modeling of radio visibility.
Creation of a digital model of the terrain is a representation of the terrain in the form of an array of its points with their known coordinates in space. Coordinates are obtained as a result of aerial photography by UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). The density of points for measurements ranges from several million points to several tens of millions.
The determination of the parameter of any element on the 3D model ranges from several million points to several tens of millions, which indicates high accuracy.
Without studying the features of the area, it is impossible to start any construction, since the required type of foundation, the depth of the laying of communications and the overall strength of the constructed structure, its resistance to the effects of the external environment will depend on this.
The creation of a digital model of the terrain begins with accurate measurements by special equipment installed on the UAV. Next, all the necessary data are entered into the computer and processed using programs and special coding.
As a result, a three-dimensional model of the necessary piece of terrain is created. Thanks to this model, you can clearly see all the features of the relief in the section. Therefore, it is possible to predict the result of future works, for example, in the city of Ivano-Frankivsk.
